One of the best memories of my Freshman year, was getting an email notification that I had received a package at the mail room. I would race out of the end of class, or bolt out of my room to get to the mail room. I excitedly swiped my card at the package machine to notify the mail room workers, I was ready to pick up my package. As the mail room employee handed me my package and had me sign my name on the electronic pen pad, my eyes sparkled with excitement of what was in the package! I would run up to my bedroom with the envelope or box to see what my family or friends had sent me.
At the beginning of the year I received care packages from my dad, my best friend, Zayna's mom, my best friend Jen, her mom, and one of my cousins! I was not excited because people were sending me stuff. I was excited because I felt loved by my favorite people in the world. They would send me thoughtful cards or messages or encouragement through the beginning of my freshman transition. Jen's mom sent me cookies for a motivational study break. Zayna's mom sent me Halloween decorations to liven up our door for the holiday. My dad sent me a jar of Swedish Fish, one fish for each day, until I would come home and see my family for break. My cousin sent me things that would remind me of my New England home in the fall, and Jen would send me a water bottle to remind me to stay hydrated. These simple things made my adjustment to college so much easier. Each day I ate a Swedish Fish, I knew I was getting closer to seeing my friends and family. As I would use the things they all sent me, I would be reminded of how many people had my back, and wanted to help me make the adjustment to college easier. I still had my support system, even if they were far away.
