Cellphones
After I moved into my dorm room and my family had flown home and I became very homesick. It was fun for the first few nights, but then how far away I was from home really started to sink in. I quickly realized how my cellphone was one of my most valuable possessions. I think it was always easy to take for granted how important technology can be, but I really started to see more of its value once I started college.
Being in Atlanta, I was no longer a quick drive away from my friends house, or a room away from my parents, but thankfully I was just a phone call away. Especially towards the beginning of the year, I would call my family all the time because I missed them so much. My two best friends would receive phone calls from a few times a day, as we would share our college experiences with each other. We were able to tell each other about the people we had met, the classes we were taking, and the clubs we had joined. My best friends and I easily shared pictures of our adventures with each other from our phones, and I was even able to FaceTime my closest friends and family members whenever I was feeling lonely, homesick, or just missed seeing their faces!
Now that I am getting more adjusted to college and meeting new friends from all around the globe, I realize how much my cellphone comes in handy when I want to communicate with my friends that are not so close to home when I go back for breaks and in the summer. What started out as an easy fix from being far from home a lot easier, eventually grew to be my main means of communication with my friends from Emory and my friends and family at home.
